Introduction to Sign Language: (All Ages) Learn to communicate in American Sign Language in this 6-week class for beginners. This class is designed for learners who have little to no experience with ASL and want to learn to make basic conversation and build a foundation for further ASL study toward fluency. In addition to learning how to sign and interpret the ASL alphabet, basic vocabulary and grammar, and commonly used phrases, students will also learn about the Deaf and hard of hearing community and build strategies for communicating and translating for members of the community.
Drawing Realistic Images: (Middle School and up) Drawing is an art, but in many ways it’s also a science: there are techniques to help even the most amateur of artists deconstruct a subject into basic shapes, shades, and lines and then build them up to beautiful, realistic sketches. And in this 4-week class, you’ll learn to do just that as you explore and practice skills from visualizing subjects as shapes to managing line weight, shading, and proportion. Whether you dream of drawing portraits, landscapes, objects, or animals, these fundamental techniques will help you draw realistic images of any kind.
The Art of Origami: (Upper Elementary/Middle School) With just a sheet of paper, some imagination, and some practice, you can make some of the world’s most amazing art. In this class, students will learn how as an expert instructor guides them through origami projects for beginners and explains the ins and outs of one of the world’s oldest and most beloved art forms. Students can drop in for a session to try one project or return to the fold weekly to perfect their craft. Bring lots of paper and prepare for lots of fun!
Financial Literacy for Young Adults: (High School, College, Young Adult) Ask nearly any young adult what they wished they'd learned in high school and college, and they're likely to mention budgeting, investing, managing debt, and other personal finance topics. So, you’re in luck: in this six-session class, you’ll demystify and get ahead of these financial literacy topics that tend to catch young adults by surprise. From budgeting to investing and savvy shopping to navigating taxes, you’ll develop insight into all matters of money and learn to make decisions that maximize your money, too. You will learn Budgeting, banking, investing, managing credit and debt, Shopping and consumer skills, taxes and expenses, retirement, financial risks, and insurance.
Let’s Dance! (Elementary students) In Let’s Dance! classes, kids can explore movement, fitness, rhythm, and even culture and have a whole lot of fun doing it all. Each session involves some instruction, some music, and lots of movement as learners visit a different dance genre or routine. Whether students are veteran dancers or feel like they’re moving on two left feet, they’ll get their blood flowing and learn new things in this upbeat, collaborative environment.
ACT 8-Week Prep Class The ACT 8-Week Prep Class is designed to prepare students to take the ACT by equipping them with skills and test-taking strategies to improve their scores. The course will cover content and strategies for the Reading & Writing and Math sections. Upon completion of the course, students should have an understanding of the ACT exam structure, general and section-specific test-taking strategies, and the ability to identify and handle difficult or tricky questions.
It’s not Magic, It’s Science (Elementary/Middle School) Learning can be magical! In this class, students will learn magic tricks and solutions to seemingly-impossible challenges, plus learn the scientific explanations that make them work. In each class, learners will participate in several tricks and challenges that use the principles of science to do something amazing, break down the scientific principles that made each trick possible, and learn how those principles apply to practical purposes in our daily lives. By the end of each session, students will have new magic tricks to wow their friends and family, and new scientific knowledge to impress their teachers, too. Most tricks will simply use household items and school supplies, making it easy for students to learn, practice, and perform their new tricks.
Algebra in Real Life (Grades 6-10) At first glance, algebra looks abstract: where did the numbers go and why are they now letters? But algebra is right at home in the real world: in fact, it's one of the most common ways we investigate and understand the world around us. In these weekly sessions, students will see the concrete, practical side and use it to measure their surroundings and hobbies as they develop algebra skills and algebra appreciation.
